On A Mission

I had two bunches of bananas, one several days older than the other and rapidly ripening so on this morning's breakfast menu: banana pancakes and turkey bacon.
Following breakfast, a few housekeeping chores and Travis' morning constitutional the three of us hopped in the car and headed a mile or so down Roosevelt Avenue to Mission San Jose - one of five such historic Catholic missions in the area. Although it's part of the National Park System, San Jose Mission is still an active parish and an important part of the local culture.
We watched the orientation film then perused the museum and gift shop while waiting for the 2pm ranger tour.
Tom was a credit to the National Park Service, possessing a wealth of information and a talent for story telling...

He did, however, remind me of the Disney character J. Audubon Woodlore...

It truly was a fascinating tour and I now know a whole lot more about the history of Texas and the roll played by Spain in this part of the world.

A couple photos from our tour...

After completing the tour Suzanne suggested we visit San Antonio's Historic Market Square - so we asked Google to take us there. We quickly found a parking space, procured a two hour parking pass at the kiosk, placed it on the dash of the car and began exploring.
It reminded me a little of the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, Turkey... if they sold sombreros, tiny plastic accordions and pink flamingos at the Grand Bazaar.

We browsed the many gift shops of Market Square then came to the collective realization that the banana pancakes were no longer cutting it. It was time to eat.
As luck would have it there was a very colorful, very appealing looking Mexican restaurant across the walkway running down the center of the marketplace. We love our Mexican food (and drink) so we went on in. Turns out Mi Tierra is somewhat of a San Antonio institution. The food was top notch (as was the service) and the margaritas were pretty darn good as well. The wandering Mariachi Band just made the experience all the more enjoyable.

The 'Tres Leche' dessert was incredible...

But the highlight of the afternoon was our chance encounter with Hispanic Elvis!

Could you ask for a more perfect end to an already perfect day?

We drove back to Traveler's World where Travis was eagerly awaiting our return. We spent the remainder of the evening reflecting on the day's events and watching a little tv as I worked on my blog.
Oh, I also called Verizon and upgraded to their Beyond Unlimited Plan. We've been doing a lot of streaming, uploading, downloading, hot-spotting, Face Timing and have just generally been using a sh*% ton of data since leaving home a couple weeks ago. In fact, we ran out of data this afternoon. I hated to do it but we're going to be spending more and more time in this nomadic lifestyle and internet connectivity, the ability to send and receive large files etc. is important to us and essential for Suzanne to successfully conduct business. I also have students who want to study with me via Skype while we're on the road.
I think it was the right thing to do.

    Thanks for reading my blog.
